LA REPUBLICA: More than 9 million 900,000 people in urban areas have informal employment in Peru

From October 2021 to September of this year, the informality rate in Peru reached 76.1% of the employed population. Although it is 0.3 percentage points less than in the rolling year October 2020-September 2021, it is still well below pre-pandemic levels (Oct 18-Sep 19), when it stood at 72.8%, according to the latest report "Labor market behavior indicators at the national level” of the Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática"(INEI).

In detail, during the mobile year of analysis, the informality rate in the urban area reached 70.9% of the employed population. While, in the rural area, it was 95.4%.

Informal employment in the urban area

According to the INEI report, the urban population with informal employment reached 9 million 916,300 people. That is, this group does not have social benefits or works in unregistered production units.

Compared with the similar mobile year of the previous period, the population with informal employment increased by 8.5% (773,400 people) and, compared to the same mobile year of the years 2020 and 2019, it increased by 28.1% (2 million 172,800 people). and 12.3% (1 million 085,300 people), respectively.

During the analysis period, informality in urban areas affected women (74.4%) more than men (68.1%). Likewise, it had a greater impact on the young population under 25 years of age, since 86.0% of the employed in this age group have informal employment. Meanwhile, the lowest rate of informality is located in the age group of 25 to 44 years with 66.5%; and among those aged 45 and over with 70.2%.

According to geographic domains, informal employment increased on the coast by 9.9% (553,500 people). In the mountains it increased by 9.0% (205,400 people), while in the jungle it grew by 1.1% (14,400 people), compared to the mobile year of the previous period.
